Strabane Community Project Switched On
Local energy company, NIE Energy has given a group of older people from Strabane an early Christmas present of free energy saving light bulbs.
The free bulbs were given out at Strabane Community Project’s annual Christmas lunch, held recently in St Patrick’s Hall. Linda Maguire from NIE Energy’s Omagh office attended the event and presented the bulbs.
Linda from NIE Energy said: “NIE Energy is delighted to be able to give free energy saving light bulbs to members of Strabane Community Project luncheon club.
“NIE Energy is keen to help people save energy and money and one simple way to do this is to replace standard light bulbs with energy saving ones. An energy saving light bulb uses a fifth of the electricity of a normal bulb, so each bulb when put in a frequently used light, can save approximately £10 a year of your electricity bill!
“Traditionally, energy saving bulbs were bigger than standard bulbs and either didn’t fit or poked out of the top of the lamp shade. That’s not the case anymore. You can now get energy saving bulb equivalents of nearly every shape of bulb you might need, and they are nice and bright as well.”
Karen ODonnell, Project Co-ordinator for Strabane Community project, added: “We provide a range of services to improve the quality of life experience for older people in the area.
“Around 40 older people attend our luncheon club daily and 80 older people avail of meals on wheels and we have 300+ on our Good Morning free telephone alert service.
“Many thanks to NIE Energy for the free energy saving bulbs. With many of the older community living on tight budgets, it is great to be able to give our luncheon club members free energy saving light bulbs. Taking this simple step, such as changing to energy saving light bulbs, will save them both money and energy. “
